ABOUT ROSÈS

Popular among the spring and summer months (but in our opinion all year around!) Rosé (from French rosé) is a type of wine that incorporates some of the color from the grape skins, but not enough to qualify it as a red wine. It may be the oldest known type of wine, as it is the most straightforward to make with the skin contact method. The pink color can range from a pale "onion-skin" orange to a vivid near-purple, depending on the varietals used and winemaking techniques. There are three major ways to produce rosé wine: skin contact, saignée, and blending. Rosé wines can be made still, semi-sparkling or sparkling and with a wide range of sweetness levels from highly dry Provençal rosé to sweet White Zinfandels and blushes. Rosé wines are made from a wide variety of grapes and can be found all around the globe

WHAT IS ROSE, EXACTLY?

Glad you asked! Rosé (literally, the French word for ‘pink’) refers to wines that fall anywhere between white and red, taking their color from a limited amount of contact with red grape skins. In fact, there are several methods for making rosé: the direct press method refers to pressing red grapes so that the juice spends next to no time with the grape skins, thus picking up very little color. These pale, citrusy, grapefruit-tinged wines are what we associate with the rosés of France’s Provence region. Sometimes they spend a little bit more time with the skins – a few hours or so – just long enough to pick up some of the flavors, color, and tannins from the skins, giving rosés that are a slightly deeper color. Then there’s the saignee method, where free run juice is separated from the rest of the vat, giving deep colored rosés (and leaving behind super-concentrated juice to make some intense reds.) Rosé can even be made by blending white and red juice or wine together, which is how the rosés of Champagne are made.

AREN’T ROSES SUPER SWEET?

No matter how they’re made, the vast majority of rosés are not, in fact, sweet. For the ‘sweet rosé’ connection, we have the California wine industry to thank, with its production of sweet rosés made from the red Zinfandel grape under the name ‘White Zinfandel.’

WHAT KINDS OF ROSES WILL BE FEATURED?

This year’s 24 rosés hail from all around the world: Chile, Austria, Portugal, Argentina, Galicia, Catalonia, Rioja, Murcia, Veneto, Marche, Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Lombardia, Corsica, Languedoc-Roussillon, Champagne, Bourgogne, Washington State, California, Oregon, and – yes – Provence. We’ve got still wines, and bubbles too!
